Behavior and Classroom Management
Huntley Community School District 158 believes in a proactive and positive approach to classroom management. This is accomplished by:
- structuring classrooms for success
- teaching expectations
- observing & monitoring behaviors
- interacting positively
- correcting fluently
At the K-8 level, this is accomplished by using a common approach where students learn and know classroom expectations called CHAMPS (Conversation, Help, Activity, Movement, Participation, and Success).
At the 9-12 level, this is accomplished through structuring environments and procedures/routines, intentionally teaching expectations, modeling, observing, responding to, and correcting behaviors.
Why Is This Important
We know that students in our schools are facing different challenges in a changing society. This makes it even more important to develop learning environments where students feel safe, supported, engaged, and connected. By establishing clear structures and expectations, we are able to provide environments conducive to learning.
How We Accomplish This
This is accomplished through a multi-faceted approach that consists of:
- Huntley 158 guidelines for success (CHAMPS/STOIC)
- Be Respectful
- Be Responsible
- Be Safe
- Be Involved
- Dedicated time to launch the school year with a focus on establishing procedures, routines, and expectations;
- Intentional instruction for students to develop the social-emotional skills needed to engage in learning, leading to future-ready habits and attitudes; and
- Supporting students through the process of repairing relationships and mediating conflict.
