Safety Tips for Families

School safety is a top priority for Huntley 158 and it is truly a partnership between the school district, staff/families/students, and local law enforcement and first responders. We must all work together to create a positive school culture where students and staff feel welcomed and safe. Below are some reminders for families to help us ensure safety and security for all.

Before a Crisis - Proactive Safety Measures

  • Talk to your child(ren) about the importance of school safety. Remind them that the school district takes ALL threats of violence seriously and that there are significant consequences for using threatening language whether spoken or written. Click the link for information about our student safety assessment process.
  • Discuss with your child(ren) the motto: “If you see or hear something, say something.” Students and families can report concerning behavior or school safety concerns to school administration via Huntley 158’s Student Helpline.
  • Ask your child(ren) to seek support from a staff member or adult if they are struggling or know of someone who’s struggling.
  • Keep your contact information and emergency contacts up-to-date in Powerschool.
  • Consider childcare and transportation needs in the event of reunification. (Reunification occurs when students are transported to a different location to reunite with parents/guardians.)

During a Crisis

In the event of a crisis or emergency, everyone has a critical role to play. Below are ways you can help:

  • Please do NOT come to the school. During a Lockdown, Hold in Place and Teach or Secure the Building and Teach, no one is allowed to enter or leave the building. In the event of a true emergency, it’s also important to keep entrances clear to allow access (if needed) to law enforcement and first responders.
  • Monitor your email, text and phone messages. The District will strive to get accurate information communicated as quickly as possible in a crisis situation and provide regular updates via email, text and phone. If you receive a phone call from the District or school, please listen to the message in its entirety rather than hanging up and calling back. It’s important to keep phone lines open for critical communication and allow school office staff to engage in the safety plan.
  • Stay tuned to the district’s official communication channels. Keep in mind that what you see online or via social media may not be accurate. To minimize the spread of misinformation, please refer to the District and/or local police department as the official source of information.
