Eligibility and Enrollment
Enrollment and Eligibility
Students entering kindergarten who are identified as English Learners and who qualify for bilingual instruction based on language screening will receive placement into the program. Students who do not qualify for bilingual instruction, including all native English speakers, will be entered into a lottery for remaining spots.
Interested families must complete a Dual Language Interest Form at kindergarten registration, typically held in early June.
The lottery will take place one week after registration and will consist of a randomized drawing of those entered. Those selected in the lottery will be informed via letter. An interest form will be required from all of our families, both bilingual and native English speakers.
Prospective kindergarten students who are not placed in a class are placed on the waiting list, in the other that their names were pulled in the lottery. Occasionally families move, and if a Dual Language student transfers out, the District will notify the family of the child who is first on the waiting list. If that family does not accept the placement, the next person on the list is called.
Program participants and their families are expected to maintain a six-year commitment (K-5) to the Dual Language Immersion program. This duration of enrollment ensures full development of both Spanish and English language skills, as recommended by current data and research on successful programs.
