FAQs

The District has put together this list of Frequently Asked Questions regarding our Dual Language Program based on questions received from the community and common questions about Dual Language programs in the United States.

What is the Spanish Dual Language Program?

The Spanish Dual Language Program is a bilingual education program designed to develop bilingualism, biliteracy, and cross-cultural understanding in both Spanish and English. Students learn academic content in both languages, with the goal of becoming proficient in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in both Spanish and English.

Who is eligible to enroll in the program?

The program is open to incoming kindergarten and first-grade students. Students with various language backgrounds, including native English and Spanish speakers, are encouraged to apply.

How does the program work?

The Dual Language program follows a 50/50 model. Students spend half of their instructional day learning in Spanish and the other half in English. Academic content, such as math, science, and literacy, is taught in both languages, providing a balanced and immersive bilingual experience.

What are the benefits of enrolling in a Dual Language program?

Students in Dual Language programs experience cognitive, academic, and social benefits, including:

  • Enhanced problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Greater cultural awareness and sensitivity.
  • Higher proficiency in two languages.
  • Long-term academic achievement compared to monolingual peers.

Does my child need prior knowledge of Spanish to enroll?

No, students do not need prior knowledge of Spanish. The program is designed to support language learners, whether their primary language is English or Spanish.

What happens if my child struggles in the program?

The program provides various supports to help all students succeed through the district MTSS system, just like in other programs and classrooms throughout Huntley 158.  If students are experiencing difficulties, the grade level team works together to develop a plan for reteaching or enrichment in the classroom and identify a language of strength.  This team determines the needed intervention and the language in which it is needed.  Families are encouraged to maintain open communication with teachers to address any concerns.

Are there costs associated with the program?

No, the Dual Language program is offered at no additional cost to families.
